Chelsea F.C. have officially moved to appoint Xabi Alonso as the club’s new manager on a four-year contract, marking a major new chapter at Stamford Bridge after another disappointing season.
According to reports from Sky Sports and Reuters, Chelsea reached an agreement with the former Real Madrid and Bayer 04 Leverkusen coach shortly after the club’s 1-0 defeat to Manchester City F.C. in the 2026 FA Cup final.
The London club reportedly views Alonso as one of the brightest young managers in European football and believes he can rebuild Chelsea into Premier League and European title contenders again. Chelsea executives are said to be particularly impressed by Alonso’s leadership qualities, tactical flexibility, and ability to manage dressing rooms filled with elite talent.
One of the biggest reasons Chelsea pushed strongly for Alonso is the belief that his short and difficult spell at Real Madrid was heavily affected by a lack of authority inside the dressing room. Reports from Sky Sports suggest Chelsea do not want to repeat what they consider to have been Real Madrid’s mistake of failing to fully back the coach during conflicts with senior players.
Unlike previous appointments under Chelsea’s BlueCo ownership, Alonso is expected to hold the title of “manager” rather than “head coach,” giving him greater influence over transfers, tactical direction, squad discipline, and long-term planning at the club.
Chelsea insiders reportedly believe that giving Alonso stronger control over the dressing room and football operations will help create stability after several years of managerial instability. Since BlueCo took ownership of Chelsea in 2022, the club has already gone through multiple permanent managers including Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino, Enzo Maresca, and Liam Rosenior.
Alonso arrives at Stamford Bridge with a growing reputation as one of football’s elite tactical minds. He gained worldwide praise after leading Bayer Leverkusen to their first-ever Bundesliga title during the 2023/24 season without losing a single league match. The German side also completed a domestic double and set a European record unbeaten run under his leadership.
Although his time at Real Madrid ended earlier than expected, many football analysts believe Alonso’s difficulties were linked more to internal dressing-room tensions than to tactical shortcomings. Reports in Spain claimed the coach struggled to fully impose discipline and tactical demands on some senior players during his months at the Bernabéu.
Chelsea are now expected to support Alonso heavily during the summer transfer window, with reports indicating the club could sign several experienced players to complement its young squad. Sky Sports also reported that Alonso will play a major role in recruitment decisions and shaping the club’s future football identity.
