Chelsea F.C. have reportedly opened positive discussions with Xabi Alonso as the club continues its search for a new permanent head coach ahead of next season after sacking two managers in this season.
According to reports from football journalist Nicolo Schira, Chelsea recently held encouraging talks with the Spanish coach, who is said to be open to taking charge of a long-term project at Stamford Bridge. The discussions come after the departure of Liam Rosenior, leaving the Premier League club searching for stability on the touchline once again.
Chelsea’s ownership group, BlueCo, has overseen several managerial changes since taking control of the club, with multiple coaches dismissed in recent seasons. Because of this instability, questions had emerged over whether Alonso would be willing to join the London side despite their strong interest in him.
However, recent reports suggest the former Spanish international is seriously considering the opportunity, particularly because Chelsea are believed to be offering a long-term rebuilding project centered around young talent and future development.
Alonso has become one of the most sought-after young managers in European football following his impressive coaching performances in recent years. He gained widespread recognition after guiding Bayer 04 Leverkusen to their historic first-ever Bundesliga title during the 2023/24 season without losing a single league match — a remarkable achievement that elevated his reputation across Europe.
The 44-year-old coach also previously managed Real Madrid on an interim basis before leaving the club by mutual agreement earlier this year. During his spell in charge, Alonso reportedly won 24 of his 34 matches, further strengthening his credentials as one of football’s brightest managerial prospects.
Chelsea are believed to be considering several candidates for the role, including Andoni Iraola, Marco Silva, and Cesc FÃ bregas. Former FC Barcelona manager Xavi has also been linked with the position in recent weeks.
