Seven students from Groupe Scolaire Runaba in Butaro Sector, Burera District, have been arrested after they were accused of assaulting three teachers at the school, according to information from local security authorities.
The students were reportedly detained after being suspected of involvement in a violent incident that targeted teachers at the school. Authorities said the incident involved three teachers who were allegedly attacked by some students, leading to an investigation by security organs.
Due to child protection and journalistic ethics, the identities of some of the students involved have not been fully disclosed because several of them are below the age of 18. The suspects include students aged between 15 and 18 years old.
The teachers reportedly affected by the incident include Nshimiyimana Michel, aged 33, Nkundineza Jean Marie Vienny, aged 45, and Bucyayungura Jean Baptiste, aged 35.
Following the arrests, the Butaro Sector administration together with the Rwanda National Police held discussions with students at the school, encouraging them to maintain good discipline, respect teachers, and follow school regulations.
During the meeting, students reportedly acknowledged that mistakes had been made and expressed willingness to improve their behaviour and avoid similar incidents in the future.
The arrested students are currently being held at Butaro Police Station as authorities wait for the affected teachers to officially file complaints with the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) so that further investigations can continue.
The incident has renewed discussions about discipline, respect, and safety in schools, with education stakeholders emphasizing the importance of resolving conflicts through dialogue and following legal procedures rather than violence.
