Pope Leo XIV has been awarded the 2026 Liberty Medal, one of the United States' highest civilian honors recognizing individuals who have made outstanding contributions to advancing freedom and human rights. The award was presented by the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia ahead of the United States' 250th Independence Day celebrations. The Pope accepted the honor through a video address from the Vatican after receiving the medal earlier this year.

The National Constitution Center recognized Pope Leo XIV for his commitment to promoting religious freedom, freedom of conscience, freedom of expression, and the dignity of every human person. The award is presented annually to leaders whose work has strengthened liberty and democratic values around the world.

In his acceptance speech, Pope Leo said he was honored to receive the medal during the year marking the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence, signed on July 4, 1776. He described America as a nation founded by courageous men and women seeking freedom and expressed hope that its founding principles would continue to inspire future generations.

The Pope reflected on the Declaration of Independence's affirmation that all people are created equal and possess the inalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. He said these rights are rooted in the belief that every person is created in the image of God and therefore possesses inherent dignity that governments are called to protect.

Pope Leo also highlighted religious freedom as one of the cornerstones of American democracy. He said the freedom to practice one's faith and follow one's conscience has enabled different religious communities to work together in promoting education, healthcare, charity, and the common good.

Calling for greater unity, the Pope urged Americans to engage in respectful dialogue despite political and social differences. He encouraged citizens to listen to one another, seek peaceful solutions, and remain committed to justice, equality, and human dignity.

Concluding his remarks, Pope Leo expressed hope that the United States' 250th anniversary would serve not only as a celebration of its history but also as an opportunity to renew its commitment to the values of freedom, justice, peace, and respect for every human life. "May God bless the United States of America," the Pope said as he ended his address.
