Rayon Sports FC have once again etched their name into East African football history after defeating Kenya’s Gor Mahia 2-1 to win the 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup, securing the prestigious regional title for the second time in the club’s history. The final, played at Amahoro Stadium in Kigali tonight, saw the Rwandan giants overcome one of the tournament’s most successful clubs to lift the trophy in front of thousands of jubilant supporters.
Following the final whistle, Rwanda’s Prime Minister, Dr. Justin Nsengiyumva, presented the CECAFA Kagame Cup trophy to the victorious Rayon Sports players and technical staff during a colorful award ceremony. The triumph earned the club the tournament’s top prize of US$30,000, equivalent to more than RWF 43 million, rewarding an outstanding campaign that showcased determination, discipline, and attacking football throughout the competition.
The victory marks a significant milestone for Rayon Sports, ending a 28-year wait for another CECAFA crown. The club first won the regional championship in 1998, when it defeated Mlandege 2-1 in Zanzibar to become the first Rwandan team to lift the CECAFA Clubs' Cup outside Rwanda. With their latest success in Kigali, Rayon Sports have now become the first Rwandan club to win the tournament both on home soil and abroad, further cementing their place among East Africa’s football elite.
The CECAFA Kagame Cup is one of the oldest and most prestigious club competitions in East and Central Africa, bringing together top teams from the region to compete for regional supremacy. Over the decades, the tournament has produced memorable rivalries and served as a platform for clubs to demonstrate their quality beyond their domestic leagues.
