Tunisia have made a dramatic change to their technical staff after parting ways with head coach Sabri Lamouchi following a disappointing start to their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.

The Tunisian Football Federation decided to dismiss the French-Tunisian coach after the national team suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat against Sweden in their opening Group F match.

The decision comes only months after Lamouchi was appointed as Tunisia’s head coach in January 2026, with the responsibility of leading the Carthage Eagles at the World Cup. The 54-year-old manager replaced Sami Trabelsi and signed a two-and-a-half-year contract as Tunisia prepared for football’s biggest international tournament.

Tunisia’s opening World Cup match quickly turned into a difficult night as Sweden dominated the game and secured a convincing 5-1 victory. The result created immediate pressure on Lamouchi, with the federation moving quickly to make a coaching change as the team’s tournament ambitions were placed under serious threat.

After the match, Lamouchi admitted that Tunisia made several costly mistakes and needed to improve their performance in the remaining group matches. The former midfielder described the defeat as painful and acknowledged that the team had failed to compete at the expected level.

Following Lamouchi’s dismissal, Tunisia are preparing to appoint Mondher Kebaier as interim head coach. Kebaier is a familiar figure in Tunisian football, having previously managed the national team between 2019 and 2022.

The decision is aimed at bringing stability to the squad as Tunisia continue their World Cup campaign. The Carthage Eagles still have important matches ahead against Japan and the Netherlands, meaning the new coaching staff will have limited time to rebuild confidence and improve results.

Lamouchi arrived in Tunisia with international experience, having previously managed clubs such as Rennes, Nottingham Forest, Cardiff City, and Al-Riyadh. He also led Ivory Coast at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, where the team was eliminated during the group stage.
