U.S. President Donald Trump has reignited controversy over Greenland after sharing an AI-generated image of himself towering over the Arctic island with the message, āHello, Greenland!ā
The dramatic social media post, published Friday night, showed Trump overlooking Greenlandās mountains and colorful coastal villages, reviving debate about his long-standing interest in acquiring the Danish territory. The image quickly spread online and sparked strong reactions across Europe and Greenland itself.
The post came only hours after a senior U.S. envoy visiting Greenland faced angry demonstrations during the opening of a new American consulate in Nuuk, the islandās capital. Protesters carried Greenlandic flags and signs rejecting what many described as growing U.S. political pressure on the autonomous Danish territory.
Greenlandās leaders have repeatedly insisted the island is not for sale. Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen recently reaffirmed that Greenlandās future would be decided by Greenlanders alone, while Danish officials have also pushed back strongly against any suggestion of U.S. control over the territory.
Trump has frequently argued that Greenland is strategically important for American national security because of its location in the Arctic and its vast natural resources. His administrationās renewed focus on the island has fueled diplomatic tensions between Washington, Copenhagen, and Nuuk throughout the year.
The reopening of the larger U.S. consulate is widely viewed as part of Washingtonās effort to expand its influence in the Arctic region. However, the move has been met with growing resistance from local residents, many of whom fear increased foreign interference.
