South Africa national team captain Ronwen Williams has called for unity among African countries after responding to controversy surrounding comments that were recently attributed to him. The goalkeeper denied making statements suggesting that Africans should support Mexico during the FIFA World Cup and urged fans to focus on football rather than political debates.
Williams said he had become the subject of criticism over comments he insists he never made. Addressing the situation, the Bafana Bafana captain clarified that his message has always been about African solidarity and supporting one another regardless of individual challenges facing countries across the continent.
“I’ve been a target over the last few days for things I haven’t said. I didn’t say anything about Africa and people supporting Mexico. I’ve always said, as Africa, we’re one, we support each other in good or bad moments,” Williams said.
The South African goalkeeper explained that every African nation has its own challenges but emphasized that those differences should not divide people. According to Williams, football provides an opportunity to bring people together and celebrate shared passion beyond borders.
The controversy comes as the World Cup continues to create conversations around national identity, international relations, and football culture. Williams highlighted the diverse environment surrounding the tournament, pointing to the presence of supporters from different backgrounds as an example of how football connects people.
“We’re in Atlanta now and I see so many Africans, Mexicans in one room, that’s the beauty of football,” he said. “So let’s just enjoy, let’s have a wonderful time and we leave politics to the politicians, let’s play football and criticize for what happens on the field.”
Williams’ comments reflect his belief that football should remain a platform for unity and competition rather than division. As South Africa’s captain, he has continued to promote teamwork and continental pride while preparing his side for their World Cup campaign.
The goalkeeper, who plays a key leadership role for both club and country, called on supporters to celebrate the tournament and judge teams based on performances on the pitch instead of off-field discussions.
