Mohamed Salah has sparked major debate among football fans after releasing an emotional statement about the current direction of Liverpool F.C. following another disappointing defeat this season.
The Liverpool forward shared a passionate message reflecting on the clubâs recent struggles and calling for a return to the aggressive âheavy metalâ football style that made the Reds one of Europeâs most feared teams under former manager JĂźrgen Klopp.
Salah said he had witnessed Liverpoolâs transformation over the years, from a club doubted by many to one that became champions in both England and Europe. The Egyptian star emphasized that helping Liverpool achieve that success remains one of the proudest accomplishments of his career.
âI have witnessed this club go from doubters to believers, and from believers to champions,â Salah wrote in the statement shared on social media. âNothing makes me prouder than that.â
However, Salah admitted that Liverpoolâs recent performances have been painful to watch, especially after suffering another defeat during a difficult season. According to talkSPORT, many fans interpreted the comments as indirect criticism of current manager Arne Slot and the tactical direction of the team.
The Liverpool forward stressed that the club must return to its famous attacking identity, describing it as non-negotiable for anyone connected to Liverpool in the future.
âI want to see Liverpool go back to being the heavy metal attacking team that opponents fear and back to being a team that wins trophies,â Salah said. âThat is the football I know how to play, so that is the identity that needs to be recovered and kept for good.â
The phrase âheavy metal footballâ became strongly associated with JĂźrgen Kloppâs Liverpool teams, known for their intense pressing, fast attacking transitions, and relentless energy. During Kloppâs era, Liverpool won the UEFA Champions League in 2019 and ended the clubâs 30-year wait for a Premier League title in 2020.
Salah also insisted that simply winning occasional matches should never be enough for a club with Liverpoolâs history and ambitions.
âWinning some games here and there is not what Liverpool should be about. All teams win games,â he wrote.
Despite the criticism, Salah made it clear that his emotional connection to Liverpool remains strong and that he still wants the club to succeed long after his playing career at Anfield ends.
âLiverpool will always be a club that means a great deal to me and to my family,â he added. âI want to see it succeed for long after I have moved on.â
The 33-year-old forward also repeated his belief that qualifying for next seasonâs Champions League should be considered the minimum expectation for Liverpool. Salah has previously expressed similar views in past seasons when the club struggled to secure a top-four finish.
Since arriving at Liverpool in 2017, Mohamed Salah has established himself as one of the greatest players in the clubâs history, winning multiple trophies and breaking numerous scoring records. His latest comments have once again placed Liverpoolâs future identity and ambitions at the center of football discussions worldwide.
