Liverpool FC have officially parted ways with head coach Arne Slot, just one year after inconsistency of the club in the Premier League. The club confirmed on this Saturday that Slot had left his role with immediate effect and that the search for a successor is already underway.
In a statement, Liverpool thanked Slot for his contributions, saying: “Liverpool FC can confirm Arne Slot is to depart his role as head coach with immediate effect and that the process to appoint a successor is under way. He leaves with a Premier League title to his name and our deepest gratitude and appreciation.”
The decision follows a disappointing 2025-2026 campaign in which Liverpool failed to defend their Premier League crown and finished fifth in the table, only narrowly securing qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League. After winning a record-equalling 20th English league title in Slot’s first season, expectations were high, but performances declined significantly during the second year of his tenure.
Reports from British media indicate that Liverpool’s board conducted a thorough end-of-season review before reaching what the club described as a difficult decision. Club executives reportedly concluded that a change in direction was necessary as Liverpool seek to rebuild and return to competing for major trophies.
Several factors contributed to the disappointing season. Liverpool struggled for consistency throughout the campaign, recording one of the weakest title defenses in recent Premier League history. The team's attacking identity also became a subject of debate among supporters and players. Before the season ended, club legend Mohamed Salah publicly called for Liverpool to return to the aggressive, high-intensity style that characterized the successful years under former manager Jürgen Klopp. Slot later acknowledged Salah’s comments while insisting that both men wanted what was best for the club.
The summer is also expected to bring major changes to Liverpool’s squad. Long-serving stars including Salah, and Ibrahima Konaté are reportedly set to leave, marking the beginning of a significant transition period at Anfield.
Despite the difficult ending, Slot leaves behind a notable achievement. He succeeded Klopp in one of the most challenging managerial transitions in world football and delivered Liverpool’s 20th league title during his first season in charge. Many supporters have expressed gratitude for that accomplishment while acknowledging that results this season ultimately forced the club to make a change.
Attention is now turning to who will replace Slot. Several reports suggest former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has emerged as one of the leading candidates for the vacancy after impressing in the Premier League. However, Liverpool have not yet announced a replacement.
